Jakarta Takes Center Stage in Hosting SEAHRN's Second International Conference on Human Rights and Peace & Conflict in Southeast Asia

Indonesia’s diverse and dynamic capital city, Jakarta, will be hosting the Second International Conference on Human Rights and Peace & Conflict in Southeast Asia. It is organised by The Southeast Asian Human Rights Studies Network (SEAHRN), in cooperation with the Faculty of Law of the University of Indonesia. The Conference is supported by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) and the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law (RWI). It will be held on 17 – 18 October 2012 at Hotel Millennium Sirih in Central Jakarta.

About 60-80 papers written by scholars, activists and academics, who are mostly based in Southeast Asia, have been selected for the two-day conference. Moreover, the Conference will highlight relevant issues such as Academic Freedom, ASEAN and Human Rights, ASEAN and China Relations and Self-Determination, Human Rights and Peace Building in Manipur. Expected conference participants would consist of seasoned and emerging researchers, academics, representatives of various work professions, governmental and national, regional and international civil society organizations.

It will be second conference since SEAHRN’s establishment in 2009. The network consists of 17 member academic institutions from Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Laos and the Philippines. The First International Conference on Human Rights in Southeast Asia was held in October 2010 in Bangkok, Thailand. These conferences aim to motivate and support scholars, researchers, and activists in contributing to the growing knowledge on human rights, peace and conflict in the region.

“The inclusion of Peace and Conflict in the agenda is what makes the 2nd conference different from the previous one”, said Mr. Hadi Purnama, Conference core committee member from the Law Faculty of the University of Indonesia. He added that "The conference would certainly open up the space for dialogues and debates. Moreover, it intends to serve as a platform to establish networks among academics, researchers, CSOs, national, regional and international agencies."

Dozens of passionate active and emerging Indonesian leaders signed up to volunteer for this conference. They have been assisting in a number of capacities, such as logistics, documentation, public relations, and coordination. The SEAHRN volunteers consist of college students and human rights activists coming from different countries of ASEAN.
